07 September 2010Blu-ray Screenshot Gallery: Alien Anthology - Aliens

This week we're taking a film-by-film sneak peak at the long-awaited Blu-ray debut of 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment's Alien Anthology Blu-ray boxset, and today it's time for James Cameron's legendary Aliens to go under the spotlight. Scheduled for release in the UK on October 25, this eagerly-anticipated six-disc set includes all four films in the legendary franchise, plus so many additional features that they had to include an extra two Blu-ray discs just to fit it all in. Click here for a full rundown of the specs. We'll have a full review of the Alien Anthology Blu-ray boxset in #188 of HCC, on sale October 21, but in the meantime we thought you might appreciate an exclusive look at a gallery of screenshots taken from Aliens. And don't forget to come back tomorrow for an exclusive first look at the Alien3 Blu-ray... 07 September 2010IFA Special: first ever Android TV from Lava is made of stone

The world's first-ever Android-compatible TV was on show at IFA - not from Sony, Panasonic or Samsung, but from virtually unheard-of Swedish company People of Lava. Known in the UK only for a range of flatscreen wallmounts, People of Lava has been beavering away on its own TV designs, and showed several at IFA including the Granite, an all-in-one LED TV/DVD player, and the Royal Sweden, a hand-built edge-lit LED TV. But the real stunner was the Scandinavia, an Android-compliant Edge LED Backlight TV featuring a case made of a mineral-based material usually used for high-end worksurfaces. The Scandinavia comes with a wireless keyboard for internet surfing, has a full HD 1920x1080 pixel resolution, and has a built-in Android software platform (as used in many mobile phones) with out-of-the-box applications including Facebook, Youtube, an Internet browser, Webmail, Twitter and Google Maps. It also supports optional USB peripherals and media playback. The material used for the case is described as 'A Corian-like material which is a luxurious composite of mainly natural rock, and other materials. It's not only beautiful, it also cools the TV, amplifies the sound, and repels dust.' Prices are expected to be around ?2,500 for the 42-inch version, ?3,000 for the 47-inch and ?3,500 for the 55-inch. Unfortunately there's no definite news yet about UK availability, but you can find out more at the website here.   IFA SHOW REPORT POSTED LIVE FROM BERLIN USING AN ASUS EEE PC - PHOTOS BY CASIO EXILIM DIGITAL CAMERA

06 September 2010IFA SPECIAL: Sharp adds extra yellow to 3D with new Quattron TVs

Sharp used its IFA press conference to highlight two 3D additions to its AQUOS Quattron range of LCD TVs. The new LE925 Series consists of the LC-60LE925E and LC-46LE925E and are expected to go on sale across Europe this month, prices to be confirmed. In addition to Sharp's four-primary-colour technology (which, in the company's own words, 'adds yellow to the red, blue and green primary colours to dramatically improve the ability to faithfully reproduce colours'), the new TV range has combined the proprietary FRED (Frame Rate Enhanced Driving) high-speed drive technology with side-mount scanning LED backlighting. The upshot of this, so Sharp claims, is 'a significant improvement in brightness of approximately 1.8 times greater than conventional three-primary-colour LCD panels' that 'enables users to enjoy impressive 3D images with minimal crosstalk'. Rest assured, we'll put all of these claims to the test in the HCC Test Labs as soon as we get our hands on a review sample. Sharp also used the event to announce a couple of new sponsorship deals. First up was a collaboration with Warner Bros. to use imagery from the forthcoming CG-animated feature Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole in print ads for its 3DTV lineup in Europe. Unfortunately, the company was less forthcoming about whether or not this might lead to any exclusive 3D Blu-ray disc bundles further down the line. The second announcement was that Sharp had just signed a EUROTOP sponsorship agreement with football body UEFA to become a top partner and support events including UEFA Euro 2012.

06 September 2010IFA SPECIAL: Samsung takes on the iPad with its DivX HD-certified Galaxy Tab

Everybody knew it was coming, but Samsung still managed to impress attendees to its IFA press conference with the unveiling of the Galaxy Tab. Described by Samsung head of portfolio management, telecommunications Europe, Thomas Richter as 'not just another tablet PC... we call it a smart media device', the Android-powered tablet is the first in the world to receive DivX certification, allowing users to enjoy DivX HD video content on its 7in 1024x600 WSVGA TFT display. Weighing in at just 380g, and measuring a diminutive 19x120x12mm, the Galaxy Tab runs Android 2.2 and will be available with either 16GB or 32GB of internal storage, which can be expanded further (up to an addition 32GB) thanks to a MicroSD port. There's also a standard 3.5mm headphone port, so you don't bother other commuters with the noise from the videos you are watching on it, which can also be used for handsfree kit connection allowing mobile phone functionality without having to look like you're trying to emulate an old Dom Joly sketch. Heck, there's even a front-facing 3MP camera (equipped with an LED flash) for those of you who get a little snap-happy from time to time. Other features include 3G HSUPA connectivity, 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 3.0, microSIM connectivity and it even plays Flash too. There's no word as yet on an official UK release date beyond Samsung's slightly vague 'in the coming months' or price at this time. However, if the rumours are to be believed and the company goes aggressive on pricing at under £300, then Apple might have a fight on its hands before the year is out.

07 September 2010Apple turns iPod touch into iPhone

Jonesing for a new iPod touch? Why the hell not, it’s got a string of killer new features, including FaceTime and a camera slapped round the back. But if you’ve been eyeing it up on Apple’s official site, you could be forgiven for thinking it came with even more new skills.   It seems Apple staffers were a tad lax with their Photoshop trickery, with this pic showing off a new iPod touch with a Phone app. You can spot it on the bottom left hand corner of the device on the right. ------------------------------------- Related links: - New Apple iPod touch pictures and details - Apple iPod touch gets front and rear facing cameras - Apple special event: 10 things you need to know ------------------------------------ What’s more, further shots show the Messaging app cropping up in a Spotlight search, clearly showing these pics were cobbled together before Apple’s press pic people had the chance to take proper shots of the new iPod touch in all its glory.   That aside, there’s no denying the new iPod touch is a belter. 07 September 2010PS3 update killing PSJailbreak?

Sony’s latest PS3 firmware update isn’t usually cause for much excitement. But the latest effort fixes a “hardware security issue”, which apparently means curtains for the PSJailbreak USB stick.   The hack allows PS3 gamers to play backed-up titles without having to stick a disc into the console. However, not installing the new firmware, dubbed 3.42, will mean you won’t be able to access the PlayStation Network or Store, leaving your PS3 in limbo. ------------------------------------- Related links: - PS Jailbreak sold out - PSJailbreak users likely to face ban from Sony - Sony PS3 Slim review ------------------------------------ PSJailbreak’s official site claims that it “disables forced software updates”, but it seems Sony’s latest attempt to stop the illegal add-on from working could pay off.   Sony has yet to officially announce whether 3.42 actually stops PSJailbreak working. Have you installed the update? Has it killed your PSJailbreak USB? Tell us on our Facebook and Twitter pages.   Via Joystiq   Posted by Joe Minihane

Google’s much-vaunted iTunes rival is getting ever closer, with a pre-Christmas release planned according to ‘people familiar with the matter’.   Said people were speaking to Reuters about the Big G’s plans, which they say include a download store and a ‘digital locker’, essentially allowing you to stream tracks over-the-air to your Android mobile. -------------------------- Related links: - Google Music launching next week? - Google Android iTunes rival set to launch this year - Top mobile music apps -------------------------- Word is Andy Rubin, the man who brought Android to fruition, is negotiating plans with major record labels, with execs falling over themselves to get involved.
